چکیده

A group of mice was vaccinated against Type II pneumoccci and subsequently tested for immunity against different numbers of the live bacteria. The immunity tests were conducted within two zones of dosage. In the first zone where the doses were kept within reasonable limits (10(-6) to 10(-3) cc. of culture), the number of invading bacteria was without influence and the occurrence of infections was determined by the previous immunity response of the individual. In the second zone of dosage (where passive protection also fails), these relations were reversed, and invasion by overwhelming numbers of the bacteria invariably produced infection regardless of the previous immunity response of the individual. These results present an extreme example of the importance of the immunity response of the individual as a factor always concerned in the effectiveness of vaccination.

Studies on Immunological Relationships among the Pneumococci

Mice vaccinated with yeast were protected against subsequent infection with Type II pneumococci, but not against Types I or III. While the protection was not universal, as high a percentage of mice acquired active anti-Type II immunity, as was obtained by vaccination of another group of mice with Type II pneumococci themselves. This specific protection of mice by active immunization with the ye...

Increased protection against pneumococcal disease by mucosal administration of conjugate vaccine plus interleukin-12.

Streptococcus pneumoniae is a common cause of respiratory tract infections, its main entry route being the nasal mucosa. The recent development of pneumococcal polysaccharide conjugate vaccines has led to a dramatic improvement in protection against invasive disease in infants and children, but these vaccines have been found to be only 50 to 60% protective against bacterial carriage. In this st...

Vaccination with Live Attenuated L. Major and TLR4 Agonist Promotes a Th1 Immune Response and Induces Protection against L. Major Infection in BALB/c Mice

Background: Toll like receptors play a major role in immune responses against Leishmania parasites. Objective: To evaluate the efficacy of vaccination with live attenuated L. major and TLR4 agonist in protection against L. major infection. Methods: Attenuated L. major was prepared by continuous sub-culturing of the parasite. A total of 90 mice were assigned to 9 groups including 6 groups of BAL...

Role of imiquimod as adjuvant for vaccination against Leishmania major infection in BALB/c mice

Various adjuvants in combination with different antigens have been utilized as a vaccine candidate against leishmaniasis. However, the search for ideal adjuvants is still pursued due to the inefficiencies of current compounds. In the present study, the effect of imiquimod, as an adjuvant, is studied with soluble Leishmania antigens (SLA) in BALB/c mice. Four groups of mice were immunized with S...
